SOPA Western Fall Sectional

More than 300 Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) athletes will travel to Slippery Rock University for the annual Western Fall Sectional on Sunday, September 24, 2017. Athletes from a number of western Pennsylvania programs will compete in team and individual events in five sports including bocce (doubles & Unified Sports® doubles), long distance walking/running, powerlifting, soccer (Individual skill, 5v5 and 7v7), and volleyball (team, unified and individual skills). More than 100 coaches and 400 volunteers from the surrounding community, recruited by a student committee from Slippery Rock University, will give of their time to support the day’s activities and cheer on athletes.

Special Olympics: Western Fall Sectional

There will be a competition for Special Olympics at Slippery Rock University on Sunday, October 5th, 2014.  Bocce (doubles & Unified Sports® doubles), Long Distance Running/Walking, Unified Sports® Long Distance Running/Walking, Power-lifting, Soccer (Individual skill, 5v5, 5v5 Unified), and Volleyball (Individual skill, traditional team) will be the sports.  Specials Olympics of PA – Mercer County just recently started the program up again, so we are excited to be competing!  We have athletes competing in LDR/W and Bocce. Come out and cheer on our athletes!

The competitions are all day, but the following is the schedule for the sports we are competing in:

Competition for LDR/W:  10:15 - 1:00 p.m. at the Marching Band Field
Competition for Bocce:  10:30 - 4:30 p.m. at the Morrow Field House

 Shoe rental & 2 games of bowling will be paid for by Mercer County Special Olympics for all athletes. 

Anyone accompanying will be responsible for paying for their own shoe rental and bowling.


Athletes will need a current medical on file in order to participate.  Medicals can be faxed or mailed by August 2nd.

It is that time to start training for basketball! Athletes interested in participating basketball will begin training on June 30, 2014 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM.** Training will be every Monday and Tuesday until July 29, 2014. Training will be at the First Assembly of God Church (1455 N. Keel Ridge Rd., Hermitage, PA  16148).

**In order to begin training for basketball, athletes must complete an athlete application (including medical release completed and signed by physician within one year), athlete release, interest form, and photo release form.
